Mood Disorders in Children with Epilepsy

Shinnar, M.D., Ph.D. and Christine O’Dell, RN, M.S.N., CNS of
Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center in New York, will
discuss the definitions of mood disorders in children with epilepsy, the
diagnosis of a mood disorder and review the available diagnostic tools. In
addition, they will discuss chronic illness in pediatric neurology and the
commonly used antiepileptic medications with their effect on mood. Last, they
will cover medications and treatment options.

This program is designed for neuroscience and advanced practice nurses, school nurses, social workers, school psychologists, pharmacists and others involved in the care of persons with epilepsy who are interested in enhancing their ability to treat and counsel their patients.

To offer professionals in epilepsy care the most up-to-date tools and knowledge so that they can provide the best treatment and education to patients and their families.
Program objectives:
Upon completion of this program it is anticipated that participants will gain a clearer understanding of various aspects of epilepsy, including:
- Describe the most common mood disorders present in children with neurological disease.
- Analyze the effects of illness and medications that contribute to mood disorders in the pediatric patient.
- Integrate a plan of treatment based upon a pharmacologic and psychological approach.
